Winston Conrad Martindale, who was born in Jackson, Tennessee, started playing the role of a DJ on a local radio station shortly after graduating from high school.
While he was hosting the morning show for WHBQ in Memphis, he also completed his graduation from Memphis State University.
Later on, he worked as a morning host for various stations in Los Angeles. He also had two spoken word recordings that reached the Top 10 on the Billboard charts in the late 50s.
Starting in the mid-60s, he started hosting television music programs and game shows.
He went on to host a diverse range of game shows, such as “What’s This Song”, “Gambit”, “Tic-Tac-Dough”, “Headline Chasers”, “Bumper Stumper”, “Trivial Pursuit”, “Debt”, and “Instant Recall” among others.
