At the age of 13, he relocated to Hong Kong and started studying Chinese barbecue while working at his uncle’s restaurant. He then pursued his studies in Canada and earned his Master of Science in food science degree from the University of California, Davis.
Yan commenced teaching Chinese cooking and made his debut on a Canadian talk show in 1978.
