Flip Saunders was born in Cleveland, Ohio in February 1955.
Saunders was recognized as an All-American in basketball during his time at Cuyahoga Heights High School.
Ohio’s Class A High School Basketball Player of the Year award was won by him.
He was also a player at the University of Minnesota.
After starting his coaching career at Golden Valley Lutheran College, he went on to become an assistant coach for Minnesota for five seasons.
Saunders served as an assistant at the University of Tulsa for a period of two years.
He went on to coach the Rapid City Thrillers of the CBA from 1988 to 1989 and then the La Crosse Catbirds from 1989 to 1994.
Saunders participated in two CBA Championships while playing for La Crosse.

Between 2005 and 2008, he served as the coach for the Detroit Pistons, and from 2009 to 2012, he served as the coach for the Washington Wizards.
During the 2004 and 2006 NBA All-Star Game, he served as the head coach.
The Timberwolves welcomed Saunders back as their head coach in 2014.
He was appointed as an advisor for the Boston Celtics in 2012.

Flip Saunders succumbed to cancer at the age of 60 on October 25, 2015.
