Born in Rozel, Kansas in 1960, Gary Patterson played college football at Dodge City Community College and Kansas State University.
In 1982, Patterson became a graduate assistant with the Wildcats after starting his college coaching career at his alma mater.
Patterson agreed to be a linebackers coach at Tennessee Tech for the next two seasons.
After spending a season coaching linebackers at UC Davis, Patterson was appointed as Cal Lutheran’s defensive coordinator in 1988. He went on to coach at Pittsburg State and Sonoma State before taking on the Oregon Lightning Bolts in 1992.
He went on to return to a coaching position with Utah State, Navy, New Mexico, and TCU.
Patterson has been the head coach of the Horned Frogs since 2000, having served as the team’s defensive coordinator for two seasons.
