As a quarterback for the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Trestman provided backup leadership to ex-NFL coach Tony Dungy.
He played football at Minnesota State University Moorhead and obtained a Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law.
He began his coaching career at the University of Miami as a quarterbacks coach.
During the years 1985-1986, Trestman served as a running backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL.
