As a defensive guard and linebacker, he was an All-American at Georgia.
Between 1961 and 1962, Dye was a member of the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League.
From 1965 to 1973, he was the linebackers coach at Alabama, and then he was the head coach at East Carolina from 1974 to 1979. Dye also coached Wyoming in 1980.
He was the head coach of Auburn from 1981 to 1992 and also served as the athletic director for the school from 1981 to 1991.
