George Gillett Jr began his career in the early 1960s as a regional sales manager and later as a marketing/management consultant.
In 1966, Gillett took on the role of manager and teammate for the Miami Dolphins.
He eventually obtained a 20 percent stake in the Dolphins NFL team for $1 million.
He purchased the Harlem Globetrotters for $3 million and established a national radio group called Globetrotters Communications two years later.
Gillett founded his own radio and television company, Gillett Communications, in the late 1970s. He later possessed many affiliates, including CBS. During the 1980s, Gillett acquired various organizations such as Nashville’s WSM television station, Storer Broadcasting, Vail, and Beaver Creek Ski Resorts.
Booth Creek Ski Holdings was established by him in the mid 1990’s, and he built several ski resorts in New Hampshire, California, and Washington.
Gillett’s business ventures expanded to the sports sector when he acquired an 80% interest in NHL Montreal Canadian and its home arena for a staggering $185 million at the start of the century.
He acquired multiple NASCAR teams as well.
The ownership of Liverpool F.C. changed to Gillett and business partner Tom Hicks in 2007.
Liverpool F.C. no longer falls under Gillett’s ownership by 2010.
