Mike Newell, hailing from Albans, Hertfordshire, England, received his education from Cambridge University.
When he first began directing TV shows in the ’60s, he had aspirations of becoming a theatre actor.
“The Man in the Iron Mask,” a 1977 TV movie starring Richard Chamberlain, Patrick McGoohan, and Newell, marked Newell’s first directorial debut.
“The Awakening” and “Bad Blood” were his subsequent films in 1980 and 1981, respectively, before he directed “Dance with a Stranger” that received critical acclaim and won a Cannes Film Festival award.
