Arvydas Sabonis was born in Kaunas, Lithuania, in 1964 and later made his professional basketball debut with Zalgiris Kaunas in 1981.
Sabonis was a member of that team until he joined Forum Valladolid in 1989.
After playing for Real Madrid from 1992 to 1995, he joined the Portland Trail Blazers in 1995, almost a decade after being drafted as the 24th overall pick of the first round in the 1986 NBA Draft.
Until 2001, Sabonis was a member of the Trail Blazers, but he also played with Zalgiris Kaunas from 2001 to 2002, and the Trail Blazers from 2002 to 2003.
He rejoined Zalgiris Kaunas in 2003, but he announced his retirement from the professional game in 2005.
