Arvydas Sabonis was born in Kaunas, Lithuania, in 1964 and later made his professional basketball debut with Zalgiris Kaunas in 1981.

Sabonis was a member of that team until he joined Forum Valladolid in 1989.

After playing for Real Madrid from 1992 to 1995, he joined the Portland Trail Blazers in 1995, almost a decade after being drafted as the 24th overall pick of the first round in the 1986 NBA Draft.
