Luis Guillermo Sols (Rivera) was born on April 25, 1958 in San José, Costa Rica.
The President of Costa Rica, who is also a member of the center-left Citizens’ Action Party (PAC), is a centrist politician.
Sols won the 2014 presidential election, but San José mayor Johnny Araya Monge, who was the runner-up, stopped campaigning and was effectively elected.
Sols has been involved in a range of academic and consulting roles.
He held the position of associate professor at the University of Costa Rica from 1981 to 1987 and was also a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Michigan from 1983 to 1985.
Sols, who had been working with the Arias administration, went on to hold the position of director at the Center for Peace and Reconciliation.
He proceeded to work for the Academic Council of the United Nations System, the International University, and as a researcher for the Latin American and Caribbean Center, where he examined political and social events in Latin America.
Many essays and books on national and international affairs have been published by Sols. In the ’90s, he wrote for La Repblica, a daily newspaper based in San José.
His work on civil society, international relations, and trade has been published by Foreign Affairs Latinoamérica, Frontera Norte, Espacios, and Global Governance.
On November 27, 2012, Sols declared his intention to run for president.
He emerged victorious in the PAC’s primary against Epsy Campbell Barr, Juan Carlos Mendoza Garca, and Ronald Sols Bolaos, garnering 35 percent of the vote, which was only 110 votes ahead of Juan Carlos Mendoza Garca.
In October 2013, he selected Helio Fallas and Ana Helena Chacón Echeverra as his Vice-Presidential running mates.
Sols stated that he would work to eliminate corruption, make substantial investments in infrastructure, and strengthen Costa Rica’s universal healthcare and social security system.
The office of Sols was officially opened on May 8, 2014.
Sols and Mercedes Peas are parents of six children.
