Edson de Godoy Bueno is a Brazilian entrepreneur and billionaire who has a net worth of $2.7 billion.
In 1972, Edson de Godoy Bueno and his then-wife Dulce Bueno established a health care company called Amil, which was the source of his wealth.
While studying at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Edison developed his practical skills at a clinic.
After graduating in 1971, he purchased the struggling clinic that eventually became the largest health care company in Brazil, Amil. This company only added more than 15 companies in the last few years, which made it so attractive that the U.S.-based pharmaceutical giant, the McDonalds, became interested in the company.
In 2012, United Health Group, a health insurer, acquired a 90% stake in Amil for $4.9 billion, as part of its plan to expand into Latin America.
UHG obtained 30% of the listed Amil from public shareholders and 60% from the Buenos Aires.
Only 10% of Amil was retained by the Buenos as part of the agreement, while Edson remained Amil’s CEO.
Consequently, he was the first non-citizen to join the board of United Health, and one of the group’s largest individual shareholders, with 0.8%.
