With a net worth of $1.8 billion, Peter Gilgan is a Canadian entrepreneur.
Peter Gilgan, who had become a chartered accountant during his training, founded Mattamy Homes, a new-home builder, in 1978, named after his two eldest children, Matt and Amy.
Gilgan, who was inspired by the New Urbanism School of Design and tired of uninteresting communities, began his career by constructing one new suburban home in Ontario and has since expanded to include over 60,000 homes in Canada and the United States. As a result, he has become a respected philanthropist and founder of the largest new-home builder in Canada.
In March 2012, he made a donation of CAD $40 million to Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, which was his most recent philanthropic endeavor.
