La India, a salsa and house music singer from Puerto Rico, has a net worth of $4 million.
Born on March 9, 1969 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, Linda Viera Caballero, also known as ‘La India’, is also known as ‘India’.
‘La Princesa de la Salsa’ is the title she goes by.
India’s parents moved to New York City shortly after her birth and resided in the same house in the South Bronx with her grandmother, who played a significant role in India’s development.
India, her stage name, was given to her by her grandmother because of her granddaughter’s dark features and long, straight, black hair.
India was one of the original members of TKA, a Latin freestyle group, when she was just 14 years old.
Following the release of their debut single Come Get My Love, India exited the band and signed a solo agreement with Reprise/Warner Bros.
The aim of records was to market her as the Latin ‘Madonna’.
Shortly after the release of her debut album, Breaking Night, India became disillusioned with the direction her career was heading.
Caballero’s debut salsa album Llego la India, which was produced by Eddie Palmieri in 1992, was considered one of the best salsa albums of the year. Subsequently, Caballero became known as ‘India’ and became a hot commodity.
In 1993, India was nominated for the Lo Nuestro Award for Best Female Performer, Tropical/Salsa Performance.
Love and Happiness (Yemaya y Ochn), the house-music single released in 1994, was sung by India with Louie Vega and was a tribute to Santera, a syncretic religion from the Caribbean.
The house music with its catchy tunes gained popularity in nightclubs across the globe.
During this period, Santera’s actions towards India were heavily criticized.
Later on, she recorded Dicen Que Soy (They Say that I Am), which became a 2x gold-certified Billboard hit and featured Vivir Lo Nuestro, a duet with Marc Anthony.
In the 2000s, she continued to accumulate more awards and hits.
La India persists in recording and performing to this day.
The Salsa Giants project was joined by India and Sergio George with a new record label, Top Stop Music, in 2014.
